An interesting wee article on why kids don't read, and what to do and not to do to get them reading.

Wellington City Library "Summer Reading Challenge" 2013

Just found this on the Wellington City Library's 'Kid's Blog'; basically is a timeline of the Summer Reading Challenge which the Wellington library hosted last year!

http://www.wcl.govt.nz/blogs/kids/index.php/category/summer-reading-challenge/

Could be useful to look at, especially when trying to gauge the level of interest in a project like this?
I also had a look to see if the Upper Hutt City Library had a kids blog similar, but all I could find was this kids page, http://www.upperhuttcity.com/kids, which wasn't that helpful (and you guys have probably seen it).

National Library – recommendations

Here's another link (National Library) that outlines a few possible strategies and recommendations for teachers, libraries and families. In the wider context, it's a big problem and it appears there's no centralised effort to address it.  – Walter
